Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish macaurel.
Etymology: < South American Spanish macaurel kind of venomous snake (J. Gumilla 1741), kind of boa (A. Codazzi 1841, or earlier) < a South American Indian language of Venezuela.In the early 19th cent. the English word (in the form macaurel) is also occasionally used to denote a venomous snake; compare the following, ultimately based on J. Gumilla El Orinoco ilustrado y defendido (1741):1802 R. Kerr tr. J. Gumilla in tr. Comte de Buffon Nat. Hist. Oviparous Quadrupeds & Serpents IV. 318 Its [sc. the coral serpent's] venom is equally virulent in all, and there is no serpent, except the macaurel [Fr. la Couleuvre Macaurel, Sp. las culebras macaureles], whose bite is more dangerous.
Caribbean (chiefly Trinidad, Tobago, and Guyana).
