Etymology: < love n.¹ + lock n.², perhaps after lovelock n.¹Love locks are found in cities all over the world. The practice is said to have originated in the Serbian town of Vrnjačka Banja, where women attached such padlocks to Most Ljubavi (literally Bridge of Love), in memory of a woman who died of heartbreak after her fiancé abandoned her for another woman during World War I. The story was popularized by a poem by the Serbian poet Desanka Maksimović.

A padlock attached to a bridge, railing, fence, etc., by a couple, as a symbol of their love for and commitment to one another. Also (and earliest) as a modifier, esp. in love lock bridge.
