Etymology: < Portuguese avo hundredth of a pataca, specific use of avo a fraction smaller than a tenth (1519; as e.g. três doze avos three twelfths) < -avo in oitavo (adjective and noun) eighth, an eighth (13th cent.) < classical Latin octāvus eighth (see octave n.² and adj.).

A monetary unit of Macao and (formerly) Timor, equal to one hundredth of a pataca. Cf. pataca n. 2.
