Origin: From proper names. Etymons: proper names Maine, Anjou.
Etymology: < the names of Maine and Anjou, two valleys in the Mancelle area of north-western France where the breed was developed.
Agriculture.
A French breed of large red and white cattle developed from crossing Durham Shorthorns with French Mancelle cattle, and kept for both beef and milk; an animal of this breed.

1980 H. M. Briggs & D. M. Briggs Mod. Breeds Livestock (ed. 4) vii. 174 Starting in 1839, Durham (Shorthorn) was..crossed on the native cattle... These..were referred to as the Durham–Mancelle and a breed society was formed for them in 1908; in 1909 the name was changed to Maine–Anjou.
1995 Denver Post 16 Jan. aa1/2 Badger, who is a Chianina and Maine–Anjou cross, came from the nation's milk capital, Wisconsin.
