Etymology: < the name of William Tyrrell Macoun (1869–1933), Canadian farmer and fruit breeder.The variety was first produced by R. Wellington at the New York Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva (see quot. 1924), and named in honour of Macoun.
Agriculture (chiefly North American).
A kind of dessert apple, originally grown in Canada.

1924 Techn. Bull. N.Y. Agric. Exper. Station, Geneva No. 106. 70 Jersey Black..was crossed with McIntosh in 1909 for the purpose of securing a variety equal to McIntosh in quality but later in ripening and superior in color. One such seedling has been produced and is now being distributed under the name Macoun.
1942 W. H. Chandler Deciduous Orchards xvi. 264 A considerable number of promising new varieties have recently been introduced by plant breeders. Among these are Seneca, Macoun, Sweet Mcintosh..and others.
1975 P. Wynne Apples ii. 49 Macoun was introduced by the New York Agricultural Experiment Station in 1923... The original seed was produced by pollinating McIntosh with Jersey Black. Many people consider the Macoun the finest dessert apple grown in the Northeast.
