Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Macrauchenia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Macrauchenia (R. Owen: see quot. 1838) < ancient Greek μακρός long (see macro- comb. form) + αὐχήν neck + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1. Compare ancient Greek μακραύχην long-necked, also as noun (neuter plural) τὰ μακραύχενα.
Palaeontology.
A genus of long-necked litopterns of the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. Also (now historical, also macrauchenia): an animal of this genus.
