Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: Greek ὄρχις , -o- connective, orchid n.
Etymology: In sense 1 < ancient Greek ὀρχιδ- , assumed stem of ὄρχις (see orchideous adj.) + -o- connective; compare orchio- comb. form. In sense 2 < orchid n. + -o- connective.The position of the stress differs between compounds of orchido- in accordance with the general stress patterns of English.
