单词 maharaja
释义

maharajan.

Brit. /ˌmɑː(h)əˈrɑːdʒə/, /məhɑːˈrɑːdʒə/, U.S. /ˌmɑ(h)əˈrɑ(d)ʒə/
Forms:

α. 1600s mau raja, 1600s mau rajah, 1700s maha rajah, 1800s– maharaja, 1800s– maharajah.

β. 1800s– maharaj Brit. /ˌmɑː(h)əˈrɑːdʒ/, /məhɑːˈrɑːdʒ/, U.S. /ˌmɑ(h)əˈrɑ(d)ʒ/.

Also with capital initial (esp. as a title).
Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Sanskrit mahārāja, mahārājā.
Etymology: < Sanskrit mahārāja (also mahārājā by analogy with rājā raja n.1) < mahā- great (see mickle adj.) + rājan (see raja n.1). Compare French †marrajah (1758), maha-rajah (1830).The α. forms generally reflect the nonstandard Sanskrit form mahārājā with final long , as quot. 1855 at α. shows (the spellings with final -h are probably due to the influence of rajah , formerly the usual spelling of raja n.1). The final short -a of Sanskrit mahārāja normally escaped the analogical influence of rājā in compounds such as gosvāmimahārāja chief priest (which may lie behind quot. 1826 at β. ), mahārājakumāra crown prince (compare quot. 1903 at β. ), and śivamahārāja King Shiva (compare quot. 1989 at β. ). This form occasionally occurs in English contexts transliterated maharaja , but its normal colloquial pronunciation in South Asia has elision of final -a , which is reflected in the β. quots. N.E.D. (1904) enters maharaj and maharaja(h) separately and gives (maharā·dʒ) /mahaˈrɑːdʒ/ and (maharā·dʒa) /mahaˈrɑːdʒa/ respectively as the pronunciation.
In South Asia: (the title of) a person of high rank, esp. a prince.
