Etymology: < Sanskrit Maitreya, the name of a Bodhisattva (and of other persons) < mitra friend, companion, associate, name of a deity (compare Mithras n.); compare maitrī friendship (see discussion at metta n.).
Buddhism.
The Buddha who will appear in the future; a representation of this Buddha.
