Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: macro- comb. form, Greek ποδ- , -al suffix¹.

Etymology: < macro- comb. form + ancient Greek ποδ-, πούς foot (see -pod comb. form) + -al suffix¹, after French macropode (L. M. Richard, 1808). Compare Byzantine Greek or Medieval Greek μακρόπους (one isolated occurrence in the Euchologion) long-legged insect.

Now rare.
