单词 maddock
释义

maddockn.

Brit. /ˈmadək/, U.S. /ˈmædək/
Forms: Middle English maddokk, Middle English maddolk (probably transmission error), Middle English maðek, Middle English mazek (probably transmission error), Middle English– maddock.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Ultimately < the Germanic base of mathe n. + a diminutive suffix (see -ock suffix); compare Middle Low German mēdeke , Old Icelandic maðkr , Danish maddike , Swedish mask . It is uncertain whether the Middle English word is a loan from early Scandinavian (compare mawk n.), or represents the continuation of a native item unattested in Old English, or alternatively is an independent diminutive formation in Old English or Middle English.
