Etymology: < the name of Commissaire (also Inspector) Maigret, the fictional detective-hero of a series of novels by Georges Simenon (1903–89), Belgian-born French novelist.Introduced in the novel Pietr-le-Letton (first published in 1931 and translated in 1933 as The Case of Peter the Lett), the character appeared in more than 100 widely translated novels and stories. 1966 J.
