Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Maeonia ; Greek Μῃονίη , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Maeonia and its etymon ancient Greek (Ionic) Μῃονίη (Hellenistic Greek Μαιονία : compare -ia suffix1), the name of a north-eastern region of Lydia in Asia Minor (now part of western Turkey) or of Lydia in general + -an suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek (Ionic) Μῃόνιος, Byzantine Greek Μαιόνιος (4th cent.), classical Latin Maeonius Maeonian.The people called Μῄονες (Maeonians) by Homer were by later writers referred to as Λυδοί (Lydians); compare quot. 1847 at sense B.
