Etymology: < Sanskrit Māgadhī < Magadha South Bihar.

A dialect of Prakrit, anciently spoken in an area corresponding with part of the modern state of Bihar.Māgadhī Apabhraṃśa (see quot. 1801) is the name of a later form of the language.
