Etymology: < post-classical Latin magistration-, magistratio (from 5th cent. in sense ‘skill, artifice’) < classical Latin magistrāt- , past participial stem of magistrāre (see magistrate v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French magistration (1531 or earlier). N.E.D. (1904) indicates the stress as magiˈstration.
