Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Magna Carta.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Magna Carta (see below) < classical Latin magna , feminine of magnus great (see magni- comb. form) + carta charta n. The spelling with Ch- was common up to the end of the 19th cent.
1. The charter of English personal and political liberty, obtained from King John in 1215, repeatedly confirmed, and appealed to in all disputes between the sovereign and his or her subjects, until the establishment of constitutional government; = Great Charter at charter n.1 1a. Usually without article.
