Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish manso.
Etymology: < Spanish manso tame, unaggressive, domesticated (1220–50), probably < post-classical Latin mansus tame (c700 in a Spanish source), probably back-formation < classical Latin mansuētūdō mansuetude n. Compare classical Latin mansuēs tame, mild, gentle, and Portuguese manso (1085), Italian manso (c1319, archaic and literary), Catalan mans , Old Occitan mans . See earlier Indio manso at Indio n. (a).
