Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin maleficiātus.
Etymology: < classical Latin maleficiātus, past participle of maleficiāre to practise black magic (late 2nd cent. in Apuleius), in post-classical Latin also to harm (from early 13th cent. in British sources), to bewitch (mid 13th cent. in British sources, also attested early 17th cent.), perhaps < maleficium (see malefice n.). Compare French maléficié bewitched (early 16th cent. in Middle French).
Obsolete.
Bewitched; spec. made impotent by spells. Also as n.: a bewitched person.
