Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μανδύλιον.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek μανδύλιον, μανδίλιον, μαντίλιον cloth, hand-towel, handkerchief, tablecloth (also μανδήλη , 5th cent.), especially in phrase τὸ ἅγιον μανδήλιον ‘the holy towel’ < classical Latin mantēlium hand-towel, napkin, variant (probably as inferred singular after mantēlia , plural) of mantēle (also mantēlum ), perhaps cognate with Umbrian mantrahklu , and probably originally a compound of the Italic bases of manus hand (see manus n.1) + tergere to wipe (see terse adj.).Classical Latin mantēle is no longer thought to be cognate or identical with mantellum mantle n.
Theology.
A head-cloth believed to display the impression of Christ's face, venerated esp. by the Eastern Orthodox Church; an image of Christ representing or reproducing this.

1970 J. B. Segal Edessa v. 215 Here their [sc. the Byzantines'] prize was not military conquest but the portrait of Jesus, the mandylion.
1991 Oxf. Dict. Byzantium 1282 The Mandylion image was also known in the West where, with certain differences of detail (Christ's neck is not included, the crown of thorns is eventually added), it developed as the ‘Veronica’.
