Etymology: Partly < (i) Urdu manzil and its etymon (ii) Persian manzil, partly (iii) < Turkish menzil, all in senses ‘halting place, day's journey, night lodging for travellers’, and partly < their common etymon (iv) Arabic manzil stopping place, station, noun of place < nazala to descend, alight. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mɒ·nzil) /ˈmʌnzɪl/.
In the Middle East: the distance between two halting places, a stage; a halting place, an inn or other resting place for travellers.
