Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French (poulet) à la Marengo.

Etymology: < French (poulet) à la Marengo (1833) < Marengo, the name of a village in northern Italy, the site of a battle in which Napoleon Bonaparte decisively defeated the Austrians in 1800 and after which the dish is said to have been served to him.

As postmodifier, and in à la Marengo. Designating chicken (or occasionally other meat) sautéed in oil, served with a tomato sauce, and traditionally garnished with eggs and crayfish.
