Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mantispidae.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Mantispidae, family name (J. O. Westwood Introd. Mod. Classif. Insects (1840) II. 58; compare earlier Mantispides , tribe name (W. E. Leach 1815 in Edinb. Encycl. 139/1)) < Mantispa , genus name (J. K. W. Illiger in J. G. Kugelann Verzeichniss der Käfer Preussens (1798) 499, apparently after earlier use as specific name: see note) + -idae (see -id suffix³). Compare French mantispe (Latreille 1802).The name Mantispa appears to be < post-classical Latin mantis mantis n., but the ultimate origin of the form is unclear. The type species of the genus had been called Raphidia mantispa by J. A. Scopoli (1763 in Entomologica Carniolica 272; hence also in the 1767 ed. of Linnaeus Systema Naturæ). The suggestion, sometimes made, that the genus name was formed by redivision of the binomial Mantis pagana (J. C. Fabricius 1775) therefore appears improbable.
