Compare Occitan mapemonde, Catalan mapamundi (1379), Spanish mapamundi (1569), Portuguese mapa-múndi (15th cent.), mapa-mundo (1443), Italian mappamondo (13th cent.). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mæpmōu·nd) /mæpˈməʊnd/.
