Compare Portuguese maracaná (1873 in Machado, but probably earlier). N.E.D. (1905) enters this under maracan and gives the pronunciation (mærăkæ·n) /mærəˈkæn/.

Obsolete.

Any of several Brazilian macaws, esp. the blue-winged macaw ( Ara maracana).G. Shaw ( Gen. Zool. 1812, VIII. ii. 397) identified the maracana of G. Marggraf as Psittacus severus, which was later reclassified as A. maracana and A. severus.
