Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French manifestant.
Etymology: < French manifestant (1849) < manifester (although only attested later in this specific sense: see manifest v.) + -ant -ant suffix1. The French formation is probably after or greatly influenced by the title of K. Marx and F. Engels Manifesto of the Communist Party (German Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei, 1848).
