Origin: A borrowing from Hawaiian. Etymon: Hawaiian mamo.
Etymology: < Hawaiian mamo mamo, also a name for the safflower (which, like the distinctive feathers of the bird, is a rich yellow), and in other senses.
Either of two Hawaiian honeycreepers of the genus Drepanis (family Drepanididae), the black and yellow D. pacifica and the black D. funerea, both extinct since the early 20th cent.
