Etymology: < Arabic ma'mūr chief officer of a district (in the regional usage of Egypt from c1820), official, one who is ordered or commissioned (see further Encycl. Islam s.v. ma'mūr), past participle of amara to order ( > admiral n., emir n.). Compare Turkish memur charged with (as past participle), official, bureaucrat (as noun).
