β. Chiefly west midlands early Middle English eaule, early Middle English eawle, early Middle English ewel, early Middle English ewle.

γ. Middle English newle (south-west midlands), Middle English nowle.

Origin: Apparently a word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Apparently cognate with Old Icelandic -áll (in soðáll flesh-hook) < the Indo-European base of classical Latin acus needle (u -stem: see acicula n.) + a suffix with -l- ; compare (with similar suffixes) classical Latin acūleus sting, thorn, barb (see aculeus n.), Old Welsh epill kind of pointed tool (Welsh ebill nail, pin).In Old English the quantity of the vowel of the first syllable is uncertain and disputed. The etymology suggests a short a , but Middle English forms such as owel at α. forms appear to show the reflex of a long vowel. The β. forms perhaps continue a by-form with a variant of the suffix that causes i-mutation (compare the Welsh forms cited above). Perhaps compare also Middle English yēvel pitchfork (see yelve n. and evil n.3). The γ. forms show metanalysis (see N n.).
Obsolete.
Any of various types of hook or hooked instrument; esp. one used as an instrument of torture.Sometimes apparently with reference to a pronged instrument, probably implying an instrument both pronged and hooked.
