Origin: A borrowing from Arabic; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: Arabic manqala.
Etymology: < colloquial Arabic manqala (in literary Arabic minqala ) ‘(device designed for) transfer (of board-game pieces from one position to another)’, ‘the game of mancala’ < naqala to transfer, remove, relocate. Compare Persian manqala ‘a sort of game’, Ottoman Turkish manqala ‘a board with two rows of cuplike hollows with which a game is played with pebbles or cowries’. In quot. 1687 via French mancala (1665).
A board game, originally Arabic but now common throughout Africa and Asia, played by two players on a board with rows of holes or hollows, having as its object the capture, or removal, of the opponent's pieces. Also used as a generic term for regional variations of the basic game.
