Etymology: < mark n.1 + sensing, present participle of sense v. Compare slightly later mark sensing n.
Designating a device which detects or reads data in the form of a sequence of marks.Such devices originally used electrically conducting marks made by hand on cards with a pencil, although photoelectric methods are now more commonly used.
