单词 markhor
释义

markhorn.

Brit. /ˈmɑːkɔː/, U.S. /ˈmɑrˌkɔr/
Forms: 1800s markhoor, 1800s markhore, 1800s– markhor.
Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Etymon: Persian mārḵwār.
Etymology: < Persian mārḵwār, apparently < Middle Persian mār serpent + xwardan to eat (compare manticore n.), but perhaps a folk etymology; however, an alternative explanation, that the etymon may be a cognate of Sanskrit mṛga deer, antelope, etc., is also problematic in terms of phonetic development.A tradition that certain ungulates hate and consume snakes is well evidenced in medieval Persian and Arabic zoological literature.
A large wild goat, Capra falconeri, with a reddish-grey coat and long spiral horns, found in mountainous regions of central Asia.
