Etymology: < French matrical (Cotgrave, 1611) or its etymon post-classical Latin matricalis relating to the womb (4th cent.) < classical Latin mātrīc- , mātrīx matrix n. + -ālis -al suffix1. In senses 2 and 3 probably independently < classical Latin mātrīc-, mātrix matrix n. + -al suffix1.With matrical vein (see quot. 1611 at sense 1) compare post-classical Latin vena matricalis (4th cent.).
1. Of or relating to the womb. Also figurative. Now rare.
