Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French marmose.

Etymology: < French marmose (1749 or later in Buffon; now rare or obsolete) < marmosa, the name of the animal in Brazilian Portuguese or another language spoken in Brazil (reported as a Brazilian word in French (in form marmosa) and post-classical Latin (in form marmota) in A. Seba Rerum Naturalium Thesauri (1734) I. 34, 48). Compare scientific Latin Marmosa, genus name (adopted by Linnaeus in the name Marmosa murina in his Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 55).Since the animal is also found in Suriname, its name may be < Dutch: compare perhaps Middle Dutch marmoeyse mermoyse n., though this denotes the marmoset.
