Origin: Probably a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Probably the reflex of a borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic mælir : see meal n.3). Compare post-classical Latin mela (from 12th cent. in Scottish sources). The early appearance of post-classical Latin mela in the same sense in Scottish sources (see quots.) suggests the existence of a corresponding Scots form, although there is no conclusive evidence until the 16th cent. The word appears frequently in abbreviated form in the Orkney rentals, compare:1502 in A. Peterkin Rentals Earldom & Bishoprick of Orkney (1820) i. 3 Imprimis waster maill iij farding terre quoyland pro rege but scat ant in maill iiij m˜ Jam tantum inde ij m˜ cost tantum flesche.
Scottish (chiefly Orkney and Shetland in later use). Now historical.
