Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare perhaps Middle French meire kind of garment (1404 in a source cited by F. Godefroy Dict. de l'ancienne langue française (1880 –1902)), also Old French moire kind of costly fabric, perhaps mohair (see moire n.¹).In heraldry, meirre has been considered to be a variant of vair n., often described as vairy cuppy or vairy tassy , as the shape of the design is reminiscent of cups or goblets (compare vairy adj. 1b, potent adj.²). Quot. 1847 at sense B. appears to represent a mistaken interpretation of meirré as an adjective.
