Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Etymons: Persian baqar-ʿīd, Urdu baqrī-ʿīd.
Etymology: < Indian Persian baqar-ʿīd ( < baqar ox, cow ( < either Arabic baqar (collective) ‘bovine animals collectively’ or Arabic baqara (singular) ox, bull, cow, with reference to an animal frequently sacrificed at this festival; compare quot. 1971) + Persian ʿīd Eid n.), partly (in α. forms) via Urdu baqrī-ʿīd (with folk-etymological reinterpretation of the first element as showing Hindi bakrī , feminine of bakrā goat; < Sanskrit barkara kid, goat). Some of the γ. forms (especially Buckrah Eade) probably reflect a corresponding folk-etymological reinterpretation of the first element as showing Hindi bakrā goat. Compare later Eid-al-Adha n.Compare also the following earlier example, which probably shows a separate borrowing of the first element of Urdu baqrī-ʿīd (compare also the first element in the α. forms of the later English word):1625 E. Terry Relation Voy. Easterne India in S. Purchas Pilgrimes II. ix. vi. 1477 They keepe a Feast in Nouember, called Buccaree, signifying the Ram-feast.
In South Asia and among people of South Asian heritage: the Islamic festival marking the end of the Hajj and commemorating Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son upon God's commandment, traditionally celebrated with the symbolic sacrifice of an animal, esp. a goat; (also) spec. the first day of the festival; = Eid-al-Adha n.
