Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish Matico.
Etymology: < Spanish Matico, further etymology uncertain; perhaps < the male forename Mateo , cognate with English Matthew (see Matthew n.) + -ico , diminutive suffix, or perhaps < mato scrub, bush (14th cent.; cognate with Portuguese mato mato n.2) + -ico, diminutive suffix.The explanation of Matico as the name of a Spanish soldier who discovered the plant's styptic properties when wounded in Peru is probably a folk etymology; compare quassia n.

1848 R. Dunglison Med. Lexicon (ed. 7) 529/2 Matico, Yerba del Soldada or Soldier's weed. A South American herb—Piper angustifolium or Artanthe elongata—which is possessed of astringent virtues.
1931 M. Grieve Mod. Herbal (1967) II. 523/2 In South America Matico is used like cubeb. Its styptic properties are due to the volatile oil, and it is used for arresting hæmorrhages, as a local application to ulcers, in genito-urinary complaints, atonic diarrhœa, dysentery, etc.
1998 Soap, Perfumery & Cosmetics (Nexis) 1 Aug. 21 The settlers dispatched most of the native populations, so early data is very rare. One herb..described was matico (Piper angustifolium), which was cited as a topical anti-haemorrhagic agent (a property confirmed by the British herbal pharmacopoeia).
