Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: master n.1
Etymology: Variant of master n.1, with simplification of medial /st/ to /s/ and, in most instances (but compare quot. 1852 at main sense), with non-rhotic pronunciation of the second syllable.
Now chiefly historical.
Master. Chiefly in representations of African-American, Caribbean, and Australian Aboriginal speech. Also as a respectful form of address. Cf. Mas' n.1 1.In later use typically highlighting offensive expectations or stereotypes of black servility, referring back to the era of slavery.
