Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili matatu.
Etymology: < Swahili matatu (short for mapeni matatu thirty cents, lit. ‘three ten-cent coins’, a flat fare charged in the early 1960s) < ma-, plural prefix + -tatu three.
In Kenya: an unlicensed taxi or minibus.
