单词 mauley
释义

mauleyn.

Brit. /ˈmɔːli/, U.S. /ˈmɔli/, /ˈmɑli/
Inflections: Plural mauleys, maulies.
Forms: 1700s maully, 1700s–1800s mauly, 1800s mylier, 1800s– mauley, 1800s– mawley; N.E.D. (1906) also records forms mawly, morley.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymon: maul v.1
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < maul v.1 (compare mauler n.). N.E.D. (1906) compares Shelta mål′a hand, arm, handle, although R. A. S. Macalister ( Secret Langs. of Irel. (1937) vi. 202) implies that the Shelta word could be from the English slang word; it might otherwise be taken as a transposition of Irish lámh hand (although mh is not /m/), or compared with Romani malaváv to strike. The origin of the form mylier is unclear.
