单词 mecca
释义

Meccan.

Brit. /ˈmɛkə/, U.S. /ˈmɛkə/
Forms: 1700s Meccha, 1700s–1800s Mecha, 1700s– Mecca, 1900s– Makka, 1900s– Makkah. Also (sense 3) with lower-case initial.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mecca.
Etymology: < the name of Mecca (Arabic Makka ), a city in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Muhammad, holy city of Islam, and centre of pilgrimage for Muslims (see Kaaba n.).Recorded earlier in English as the name of the city in forms Mechei (1524), Mæcha (1594), Mecha (1601), and Mecca (1599); the spelling with e probably represents a colloquial Arabic pronunciation. The forms Makka or Makkah are now favoured by Muslims as more accurate renderings of the Arabic name.
