单词 mawkish
释义

mawkishadj.

Brit. /ˈmɔːkɪʃ/, U.S. /ˈmɔkɪʃ/, /ˈmɑkɪʃ/
Forms: 1600s–1700s malkish, 1600s–1800s maukish, 1600s– mawkish, 1800s– maakish (English regional).
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mawk n., -ish suffix1.
Etymology: < mawk n. + -ish suffix1.The etymology would suggest that sense 2 is perhaps earlier than sense 1. For the presumably original sense ‘maggoty’ compare mawky adj., although only attested later. Recorded in widespread use in senses 1 and 2 in Eng. Dial. Dict. s.v. (in Isle of Wight also in form maakish ). Sense 4 either shows a semantic development of the present word after mawks n. or related words (see also mawkinly adj. and note at that entry), or is etymologically distinct and formed like these words ultimately < malkin n.
1.
a. Inclined to sickness, feeling sick, queasy; without appetite; faint. In later use English regional.
