Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Japanese lexical item. Etymons: mechanics n., electronics n.
Etymology: < mecha- (in mechanics n.) + -tronics (in electronics n.), after Japanese mekatoronikusu ( < meka- (in mekanikku mechanics) or its shortened form meka + -toronikusu (in erekutoronikusu electronics)). See also mecha n.Japanese mekatoronikusu was first used colloquially in 1964 by Takashi Kenjo (private communication, 6 May 1999). Registrations as trademarks of English Mecha-tronics and Japanese mekatoronikusu were published in the Trademark Gazette of the Japanese Patent Office on 10 June 1971, showing an application date of 26 August 1969. The Journal Mekatoronikusu first appeared in Japanese in February 1976, and bore on the cover the English subtitle Mechatronics Design News (see quot. 1976).
