Etymology: < Albanian ballist (1943 or earlier) < Balli (in Balli Kombëtar National Front; < balli , definite form of ballë front, forehead (perhaps < the same Indo-European base as Old Prussian ballo forehead) + kombëtar national ( < komb nation, knot ( < Byzantine Greek κόμβος knot; of uncertain origin) + -tar , suffix forming adjectives from nouns)) + -ist -ist suffix.In form Balliste after French balliste (1968 in the passage translated in quot. 1971 at sense A.).

A member of Balli Kombëtar, an Albanian nationalist and republican movement active during the Second World War (1939–45).The movement was formed in May 1939 to oppose the Italian Fascist occupation of Albania. In October 1942 it was relaunched as a fully-organized resistance movement in opposition to the communist-led Lëvizja Nacionalçlirimtare (National Liberation Movement), by which it was ultimately defeated in 1943–4.
