释义

meerschaumn.

Brit. /ˈmɪəʃ(ə)m/, /ˈmɪəʃɔːm/, U.S. /ˈmɪ(ə)rˌʃɔm/, /ˈmɪrʃəm/, /ˈmɪ(ə)rˌʃɑm/
Forms: 1700s–1800s meershaum, 1700s– meerschaum, 1800s maersham, 1800s meerchaum, 1800s meerchum, 1800s mereschaum, 1800s merschaum.
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Meerschaum.
Etymology: < German Meerschaum, lit. ‘sea-foam’ (15th cent. in early modern German as meerschuym ; < mer sea (see mere n.1) + schūm , schoum foam (see scum n.) after post-classical Latin spuma maris a kind of coral (so called from the notion that it was formed from solidified sea-foam)), attested in German in sense 1 from the early 18th cent., perhaps partly translating Turkish deniz köpüğü meerschaum, or zebed ül-bahir a name of several porous marine products ( < Arabic zabad al-baḥr ), or kef-i derya pumice stone, madrepore coral ( < Persian kaf-i daryā ), all lit. ‘sea-foam’, although these words may simply be calques on the German. Compare slightly later myrsen n.Principally mined in Eskişehir in Turkey, but also formerly in the Crimea (see keffekill n.). For the origin of the name, compare:1911 Encycl. Brit. XVIII. 72 Meerschaum, a German word designating a soft white mineral sometimes found floating on the Black Sea, and rather suggestive of sea-foam (Meerschaum). There is no information in the context of the following quotation to show whether meersham is an earlier example of this word, and, if so, which sense it exemplifies:1676 R. Hooke Diary 5 Nov. (1935) 191 Sent by Mary to [Theodore] Haak his meersham.
