Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined within an English element. Etymons: Latin Melanthaceae , -ous suffix.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Melanthaceae, former family name ( R. Brown Prodromus Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van-Diemen (1810) I. 272; < Melanthium , genus name ( < ancient Greek μελαν- (see melano- comb. form) + ἄνθος flower (see anthos n.); so named from the blackening of the perianth segments after flowering) + -aceae : compare -aceous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare French mélanthacées, plural (1817).Scientific Latin Melanthium and classical Latin melanthium melanthion n. appear to have been formed independently.

Botany. Now rare. Perhaps Obsolete.

Of or relating to the family Melanthaceae (now usually regarded as part of Liliaceae), whose members included the meadow saffron, Colchicum autumnale, and the bunchflower, Melanthium virginicum.Some botanists now place Melanthium in a separate family, but use for it the older and more correctly formed name Melanthiaceae (Batsch 1802), and do not generally include in it either Colchicum or Uvularia (see quot. 1926).
