Forms: also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Megalodon, megalodon.
Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < scientific Latin Megalodon, genus name ( J. Sowerby & J. D. C. Sowerby Mineral Conchol. Great Brit. (1829) VI. 131), alluding to the teeth of the shell hinge, and partly (in sense 2) < scientific Latin megalodon, the specific name of Carcharias (later Carcharodon) megalodon (L. Agassiz 1837 or earlier, apparently first printed in a caption to a plate in his Recherches sur les poissons fossiles (1833–43 ; see Plates III. tab. 29)); both < ancient Greek μεγαλο- megalo- comb. form + < ὀδόντ- , ὀδούς tooth (see -odon comb. form).
Palaeontology.
1. Usually in form Megalodon. An extinct marine bivalve mollusc of the genus Megalodon, whose fossilized shells are found in rocks of the Devonian period to the Jurassic; (also) the genus itself.

1869 N. Amer. Rev. Oct. 507 Under the gypsum..is a bed of freestone or grit, in which are found remains of marine animals, some of them extinct species. One of the laborers gave me a megalodon from this stratum.
1960 Jrnl. Paleontol. 34 101/1 It was eventually decided that the new species should be referred to the genus Megalodon.
2004 E. Flügel Microfacies Carbonate Rocks xvi. 809/2 The limestone always contains a large amount of organic debris... Thick-shelled bivalves (Megalodon, Conchodon) are conspicuous.
2. In full megalodon shark. An enormous extinct shark, Carcharocles megalodon, of the early Miocene to the late Pliocene epoch. Also figurative: something large, ferocious, voracious, etc.The classification of the species has proved difficult, and it has been placed in several different genera.
