Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Megalops.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Megalops (1803 in sense 1: B. G. E. de la V. de Lacépède Hist. nat. des poissons V. 289) < megalo- megalo- comb. form + -ops -ops comb. form. With sense 1 compare French mégalope (1809), and with sense 2 compare earlier megalopa n.
Zoology.
1. Now in form Megalops. A genus of marine fishes including the Indo-Pacific or ox-eye tarpon, Megalops cyprinoides, and the Atlantic tarpon, M. atlanticus (family Megalopidae).

Also called megalopa.These larvae were at first mistakenly thought to represent a distinct genus, named Megalopa by W. E. Leach (see quot. 1815 at megalopa n.).
