Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μηδισμός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μηδισμός (earliest in Herodotus) < Μῆδος Mede n. + -ισμός -ism suffix. Compare earlier Medize v.Although Cyrus the Persian took over the Median empire in 550 b.c., the Greeks continued to use the terms μηδισμός ‘Medism’ and μηδίζειν ‘to Medize’ through the 6th and 5th centuries b.c. See D. F. Graf in Jrnl. Hellenic Stud. (1984) 104 15–30.
