单词 meteyard
释义

meteyardn.

Forms:

α. Old English metegyrd, Middle English meteȝorde, 1500s meateyarde, 1500s meatyard, 1500s meteyarde, 1500s–1600s meateyard, 1500s–1600s 1800s meteyard.

β. Old English metgeard, Old English metgeurd, Old English metgyrd (in a late copy), Middle English metȝerd, Middle English metȝerde, Middle English metyerd, Middle English metyerde, 1500s metteyarde, 1500s metyarde, 1500s–1600s (1800s English regional (northern)) metyard, 1600s mettyarde.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mete v.1, yard n.2
Etymology: < mete v.1 + yard n.2 Compare Old High German mezgerta (Middle High German mezgerte, German Messgerte). The divergence of forms derives from differences in the processes of word-formation in Old English: the β. forms reflect compounding of the pure verbal stem with the noun, whereas the α. forms have an analogical connecting vowel -e- (see further D. Kastovsky in Cambr. Hist. Eng. Lang. (1992) I. 371). In the α. forms a long vowel developed in early Middle English as a result of lengthening in open syllables. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mī·tyāɹd) /ˈmiːtjɑːd/.
Obsolete.
1. A measuring rod; = metewand n. 1. Chiefly regional in later use.
